Hillsboro runners strode into the cross country season with a strong finish Saturday in Augusta at the Wichita State University’s JK Gold Classic.
“All of our athletes ran well,” coach Stuart Holmes said. “It was a very positive start to the season.”
Only 16 seconds behind the first place runner and about second from second place, senior Emily Sechrist finished third overall in the girls 4000-meter varsity run with a time of 15 minutes and 7 seconds.
“Emily ran an outstanding early season time against some excellent competition,” Holmes said. “It was great that she finished the last several hundred meters so strong.
Senior Karyn Leihy finished in 36th place with a time of 18:05.
In the boys 5K junior varsity run sophomore Jonathan Hinerman placed 14th with a time of 19:38 and senior Jon Carey logged a time of 24:41 to come in 82nd.
“It was a good first meet for Jonathan,” Holmes said. “He passed five guys in the last 800 meters.”
Holmes said runners Lydia Kliewer and Tristan Donaldson did not run because of an injury and a conflicting schedule.
Hillsboro’s next meet is Saturday at Wamego.
