Trojan trio strikes gold at Halstead track meet

Trojan throwing standout Wes Shaw has been on a record- breaking tear this season and at Halstead’s Conrad Nightingale track meet Friday, the junior did it again.
Shaw’s throw of 57 feet 3 1/2 inches in shot put broke his own record, seven-feet better than Conway Springs’ runner-up Daniel Becker.
Shaw also added a second-place finish to his day, throwing the discus 161’, 6’8” behind Marion foe Tyler Palic.
Kaden Ward turned in a stellar outing, clearing a meet-best 12’ in pole vault.
Of 14 competing schools, the Trojan boys came in ninth with 32.5 points.
In girls’ competition, Sienna Kaufman cleared 10’ in pole vault to edge Hesston’s runner-up Kylie Klassen.
Kaufman picked up a second-place finish in long jump, too, beating out freshman teammate Kinsey Kleiner 15’.5”-14’10.5”.
Out of 16 schools, Hillsboro’s 43.5 points were good for seventh place.
Ward also added fourth- and seventh-place finishes in high and long jumps with leaps of 6’ and 18’10”, respectively.
Freshman Jessica Saunders finished fourth in discus with a throw of 102’05”, as well as fifth in shot put with a throw of 34’10.5”.
Iris Klein tied for fourth in high jump with a leap of 4’6”, to go along with a seventh-place triple jump of 29’.
Eva Franz came in fifth in triple jump with 30’6”.
Abby Sechrist added a fourth-place finish of her own in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:56.69.
Sechrist supplied one more point in the 800-meter run in 2:44.59 to wrap up the Trojans’ scoring.
The Trojans will be home Friday for Hillsboro Invitational Friday with action beginning at 3 p.m. at Wiens Stadium.
