The Hillsboro wrestling team won two duals in the Southeast of Saline Dual Tournament on Saturday.
The Trojans defeated Wabaunsee 31-12 and Republic County 39-11 but lost to Russell 40-9 and Southeast of Saline 54-12.
Senior Tanner Jones was 3-1 on the day. His only loss was to Nick Wuthnow, 15-4. Wuthnow of SES is the No. 2 ranked wrestler in 3-2-1A.
Austin Cross also went 3-1; his only loss was to the No. 5 ranked wrestler in 3-2-1A, Nick Sells of Russell, 6-5. Cross led in the match 5-2 going into the third period. He gave up a takedown in the final period and then gave up back exposure points with less than 10 seconds left in the match.
“He made a critical mistake late in the match,” head coach Scott O’Hare said.
Cross responded by defeating Storm Johnson of Wabaunsee, 11-1. Johnson had defeated Cross in the Herington tournament.
Levi Mendoza won two matches, 2-1 decision and a pin, but lost two other matches, 4-0 and 4-2.
Tyrell Thiessen pinned his only opponent of the day, Chris Gulick of Russell, in the first period.
