Trojans, Bluebirds open victorious

Eager to start the season, the Trojans took their excitement out on Sterling, winning 57-10 Friday.
“Sterling is young and rebuilding, and we are coming off a great season last year with a lot of girls back,” coach Micah Ratzlaff said.
Savannah Shahan led Hillsboro with 15 field goals, two of them three-pointers.
Zaylee Werth grabbed 10 rebounds total, eight on defense.
“I thought we were very unselfish and passed the ball as well as I’ve seen in a while,” Ratzlaff said. “These girls want the best for the team, and I will continue to express that daily as we enter some tough competition and a tough league.”
Hillsboro will be on the road until Friday at a Moundridge tournament.
Goessel and Marion
The first game of the season produced long-range shooting clinic for the Bluebirds.
Goessel led 13-11 in a slow first quarter, but Marion came back to lead 23-22 at the half.
The game turned in Goessel’s favor as Logan Bryant and then Cheyenne Sawyer each hit threes and Aimee Funk scored on a steal and lay-up.
The Warriors went cold as Goessel led 35-27 at the end of three. The fourth quarter began with Sawyer hitting two threes, Braylyn Hoopes scoring three, and Abbigail Funk adding another three to swelled the final score of 51-30.
Sawyer scored a game high 16.
“We started out a little shaky and overly aggressive on defense, which led to a few mishaps on the defensive end,” coach Ryan Hoopes said. “Once we settled in, we looked much more like I hoped we would.”
Kenna Wesner led Marionwith 9 points.
“We did a good job defensively for about two half-quarters,” coach Jason Hett said. “Mid way through the third, we did not do a good job of handling some pressure and had too many turnovers we could not defend and were weak with the ball,
“I thought we came out strong tonight and executed what we have been working on early but we missed some good looks early and missed some easy lay-ups, but I was happy with what we were getting and we will start to knock those down.
“We will continue to work on handling pressure as we will see a lot of that this year.”
Centre
Centre had a rough season opener Friday at Wakefield, losing 41-8.
Sophia Luna led the team with 4 points.
“We struggled to score in part because too many turnovers limited our opportunities to take good shots,” coach Alan Stahlecker said. “The Seniors all provided leadership at some point or another in the game, but I felt that Allie Stucklik was the calm leader throughout the game.
“Anna Godinez-Vinduska showed a big step up in her sophomore season with her willingness to take the ball to the basket even though she didn’t score.
