Trojans come back to sweep

Hillsboro
Hillsboro volleyed through five teams Saturday without losing a single game to win a tournament in Douglass.
El Dorado, Leon-Bluestem, Kansas City Christian, Douglass, and Garden Plain were no match for Hillsboro.
In the championship match, Hillsboro faced a traditionally strong Garden Plain team.
The Trojans jumped out to an early lead but had to erase efforts because of a serving order error.
Despite the loss of points, Hillsboro fought to another big lead behind the serving of Kingzley Ratzlaff and closed out the first game.
The Trojans found themselves in a hole, 14-21, in the second game but didn’t give up and chipped away at the lead.
Down 17-23, Savannah Shahan helped serve the team to 20-23.
In the end, the score was 27-27, and Amyah Werth served the final two points of the game with the Trojans completing their comeback, 29-27.
“It was a fantastic first place finish for the Trojans,” coach Sandy Arnold said. ‘That Garden Plain game was taxing both mentally and emotionally. It was really out toughest competition of the day.
“The girls played well together and all contributed throughout the whole day.”
Hillsboro will travel to Pratt to continue the season.
Goessel
The Bluebird volleyball team put together a good showing, defeating Wichita Classical 25-17, 25-16.
Against Canton-Galva, in a Wheat State League game, the Bluebirds narrowly won the first 25-21 and had to come with a 12-1 run to win the second,25-15.
The Bluebirds won five matches Saturday at the Olpe Round Robin, taking home the championship plaque.
Two Goessel players got hurt in the second match of the day but were able to compete later.
“I was tremendously proud of how we all just played harder to have each other’s backs when we were hurt,” coach Crysta Guhr said. “The group showed a lot of toughness today in a very competitive tournament.”
With a nine-match winning streak, the Bluebirds at 16-4 overall and 4-1 in league play.
Goessel will be at home against Solomon and Wakefield and then participate in the Canton-Galva tournament on Saturday.
Centre
The Cougars picked up their third victory of the season in a 1-2 finish at an invitational Saturday at Herington
They defeated Rural Vista, 25-15 and 25-23, but lost to Herington 19-25 and 10-25 and to Wichita Home school 11-25 and 21-25.
The Cougars are now 3-14.
Peabody-Burns
Peabody-Burns brought home seventh place Saturday in Wakefield, losing matches to Bennington and Blue Valley and going to three sets against Flint Hills.
The Warriors finished the day defeating St. Xavier in two sets. Freshman Adyson Winter led the team with multiple aces, kills, and blocks throughout the day.
Homecoming queen Arianna Wilson, freshman Sarah Winfrey, and sophomore Chloe Callahan had multiple kills.
“We’re such a young and new team, but we’re making progress,” coach Clarissa Dutton said. “Our record may not show it, but we’ve really made some great strides over the last couple of weeks.”
