Trojans even record with third-place finish at Cheney

The Hillsboro High School boys’ basketball team wrapped up the Cardinal Classic Saturday at Cheney, topping Clearwater 69-49 in the third place game.

The victory leaves the Trojans 2-2 on the season after posting a 2-1 finish through the Classic.

Hillsboro jumped out to a 20-12 lead after the first quarter Saturday, getting a balanced scoring output, which saw three Trojans finish in double figures.

David Loewen had a game-high 17 points, Daniel Jost, 14, and Clay Shewey added 11.

The Trojans led 38-25 at halftime, and Clearwater never really posed any threat.

On Friday against the hosting Cardinals, a strong second half by Cheney proved to be the deciding factor as the Trojans stumbled, 51-45.

Hillsboro led 8-7 after the first quarter and 28-26 at halftime before Cheney turned the tide.

Loewen was the only Trojan in double figures as Hillsboro was ice-cold from three-point range.

The Trojans wrap up the year Friday, traveling to Sterling for a tip-off schedule for 8 p.m.
