The Hillsboro High School girls tennis team placed third in the inaugural Central Kansas League tournament Saturday in Lindsborg.
Emma Heyen and Becky Faber placed second in No. 1 doubles. They dominated the first two rounds, defeating Pratt, 9-1; and Hesston, 6-0, 6-1. But they lost to Lyons in the finals, 6-3, 6-1.
Elise Heyen and Courtney Weber placed second in No. 2 doubles. They began with a 9-1 win against Halstead. They followed that with a three-set win against Smoky Valley, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. In the finals, they lost to Hesston, 6-3, 6-1.
Hayley Pankratz finished in sixth place in No. 1 singles. She lost in pool play against Pratt, 9-2; and Smoky Valley, 9-2. She lost to Halstead in the fifth-place match, 6-3, 6-2.
Aubrey Meier placed fifth in No. 2 singles. She lost matches against Smoky Valley, 9-0; Pratt, 9-1; and Sterling, 9-5.
The team finished with 42 points, which was good for third place behind Hesston and Smoky Valley. The Trojans will compete in regionals Friday and Saturday in Wichita.
