Turnovers key as Goessel splits with Solomon

Staff writer

With a swarming defense and 25 steals, Goessel’s girls team raced to a 61-20 victory Friday over Solomon.

Goessel led by 13 after the first quarter, by 22 at half, and by 34 after the third quarter.

Brittney Hiebert led the Bluebirds with 18 points. Eden Hiebert scored 16. The team is 6-1 overall and 3-0 in Wheat State League play.

While turnovers helped propel the girls team, they ended up bringing down the boys team, which despite a 12-5 lead after the first quarter lost 56-36.

“We led almost the whole first half,” senior Jordan Griffin said, “but Solomon hit a three pointer to end the second quarter. We had 22 turnovers in the game, which gave Solomon too many chances.”

Solomon built on its 18-16 halftime lead, expanding it to 39-26 by the end of the third period.

Griffin scored 16 to lead Goessel. Dylan Lindeman scored 12.

The boys are 0-7 overall and 0-3 in league play.
