Commissioners to oversee Marion and Florence’s new recreation district were appointed Monday by the USD 408 school board.

Erin Whiteman was appointed to a four-year term, Jessica Reid to a three-year term, Jordan Metro to a two-year term, and Bart Peace to a one-year term.

The four will select a fifth member for a four-year term.

The commissioners will work with James Shipman, hired Nov. 22 as recreation director at $39,000 a year.

The first rec event will be a showing of the movie “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” at 7 p.m. Saturday. Admission will be $1. Concession items will be sold during the movie.

Shipman, who lives in Florence, has worked at the high school as a special education paraprofessional. He also is assistant football coach.

Leiker said he hoped the four board members appointed Monday are prompt to select a fifth board member.

“My goal would be by the first of January the board would be prompt in selecting a fifth.
