Varsity golfers claim JV title

Staff writer

Two and a half weeks away from the CKL golf meet held in Hesston, Trojan coach Scott O’Hare opted to use his varsity group Thursday at Hesston’s JV tournament.

In one of the few tournaments where they play 18 holes, O’Hare’s decision paid off with the Trojans finishing first out of six teams.

Hillsboro’s 361 was four strokes better than runner-up Hoisington’s 365.

“This is generally a very competitive JV tournament and it’s one of the few where they play 18 holes,” said O’Hare. “Due to scheduling and with the CKL tournament being at Hesston in May, I made the decision to play the varsity group.”

Elliot Ollenburger was fourt out of 41 players, shooting a team-best 85, including a solid 41 on the back nine.

Darian Ratzlaff and Colin Settle were respectively sixth and seventh, posting scores of 91, with Ratzlaff beating his previous season-best by 11 strokes.

After posting back-to-back scores in the 80s, Elias Werth’s back nine thwarted his bid for a top-10 finish, taking 11th with a 94.

The varsity group will return to action May 1 at Halstead, using the break to clean up a few things to improve consistency and course management.
