Vehicle runs through fence, trees

A Manhattan woman suffered disabling injury after a vehicle she was riding in crashed through a fence, multiple trees, and into a pasture in a rollover accident Saturday evening.
Kay B. Journey, 53, was taken to St. Luke Hospital by Marion ambulance and then was transferred to Wesley Medical Center a few hours later.
The accident occurred at 10:09 p.m. on US-56/77 near 230th Rd., according to accident reports. Troy D. Journey, 59, was driving a 1998 Mercury Sable when he drifted across the centerline and went off the road’s west side.
Troy also was injured, but his injury was not listed as being as serious as Kay’s.
Two dogs they were transporting in cages were taken to Animal Health Center.
Having the dogs in kennels likely prevented them from seeing significant injury, veterinarian Jessica Laurin said.
“Having them in a cage or pet taxi can make a huge difference to keep that dog or cat from getting thrown out the windshield and protected in the vehicle,” she said.
Not allowing pets to move around a vehicle on a trip makes a big difference, too, Laurin said.
“A lot of us don’t think about that,” she said. “We take the dogs out to the farm so we let them jump in the pickup and jump out when they get there, but especially if you’re traveling distances, having them in a carrier or pet taxi would be a lot safer.”
Hillsboro ambulance attendants, Marion firefighters, two sheriff’s deputies, and a Marion police officer assisted at the scene.
The vehicle had heavy damage to its front, left and right, including its windshield and undercarriage. It was towed.
