Velma Funk

Services for Velma Jean (Krehbiel) Funk, 94, who died April 11 at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro, will be 11 a.m. April 30 at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church.

Her family will receive friends 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Born Dec. 18, 1930, in Cleveland, Kansas, to Henry P and Emma (Kaufman) Krehbiel, she was baptized June 3, 1945, by pastor E.J. Neuenschwander at Bethany Mennonite Church in Kingman.

She grew up on a farm seven miles south of Kingman and spoke only German when she entered first grade. She spent weekdays living at an apartment or with relatives in Kingman while she attended high school there.

After graduating in 1949, she worked as a bookkeeper at a department store and later at a bank. She completed a year at Bethel College then returned to working in banks.

She married Karl Funk, whom she met while working in Newton on Nov. 27, 1954, at Bethany Mennonite Church in Kingman. They moved to Denver where he spent two years in alternative service at a hospital, then moved to a farm three miles east of Hillsboro.

She worked for 26½ years as a receptionist for dentist Henry Loewen, retiring in 1995.

She was a member of Trinity Mennonite Church and sang in its choir.

Husband Karl; brothers Alvin, Leonard, Marvin, Orville, Gene, and Floyd; and sister Ruby Brewer preceded her in death.

Survivors include children Kurt Funk, Carla Hein, Dennis Funk, and Merlin Funk of Hillsboro and Marlene Hagen of Inman and a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
