Vogel in competitive 400-meter race

The Hillsboro High School boys track team finished fifth and the girls team finished sixth out of 10 teams Thursday at Hesston.

Nathan Vogel and Dakota Kaufman were involved in close battles in some of their best events.

Vogel won the 800-meter run, edging out fourth-place teammate Bret Mueller with a time of 2 minutes, 9.57 seconds, but he bested his school record in the 400 with a time of 49.89. Surprisingly, the record time was only good enough for third place behind Morgan Burns of Wichita-Trinity who ran a meet record 48.70 and Kurt Pauly of Garden Plain who ran a 48.88.

“He was in the most competitive 400 meter race I have ever witnessed,” coach Dennis Boldt said.  “To bring three guys in under 50, is quite an accomplishment.”

Kaufman placed second in the triple jump at 35 feet, 10.25 inches; third in the long jump, 16-3.75; and fourth in the 100, 12.88. Kaufman finished behind Marion’s Julia Zeiner in both jumps.

Joel Allen also won multiple medals with a second-place performance in the 3200, 10:36.82, and a third-place run in the 1600, 4:51.13.

The Trojan male jumpers also placed well with Shaq Thiessen earning second in the long jump clearing 20 feet for the second consecutive meet with a jump of 20-6.5. Mason McCarty placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 39-0.

Callie Serene also placed second in the 800, 2:32.70.
