Volleyball teams net mixed results on opening week

County volleyball teams scored a mixed bag in the opening week of play, including a pair of Marion losses Thursday at Inman.

The Warriors came out strong in both matches of their three-set dual but were unable to push over the edge for victory.

Marion took a tight first set 25-23, but then fell 25-22 in the remaining two sets of the first match. The second match held the same heartbreaking results, as the Warriors won the opening set 25-21, but lost the second 25-11, and went into extra point before falling 27-25 in the night’s final set.

That rounded out a week that saw Marion go 2-3 overall, including a pair of wins in straight sets over Trinity Catholic on Sept. 1, and losing a five-set match to Hillsboro.

The Trojans visited Marion Aug. 31 and snatched the victory in three sets, going 25-10, 25-20, and 25-15. Hillsboro had the rest of the week off, until playing Tuesday at Hesston. The Trojans next will play Saturday at Southeast of Saline.

Marion’s other matches included a Tuesday matchup at Remington.

Marion also will face off against Centre and other schools Saturday at Centre’s volleyball tournament.

Centre played Sept. 1 at home, winning in straight sets against Canton-Galva, 25-11, 25-15 in the first match, and 25-18, 25-19 in the second match. The Cougars also played Tuesday in a quad at Solomon.

Goessel opened its season with two matches against Herington last week at home.

Goessel hung close throughout the first set of each match, but the Railers prevailed 25-23 in each instance. The second set of each match was a different story, as Herington dominated 25-8 in the second set of the first match, and 25-13 in the final set.

Goessel also played a Wheat State League tri Sept. 8 at home against Little River and Peabody-Burns.

It was Peabody-Burns’ first match since its Aug. 29 home-quad.

Peabody-Burns also will participate in a tournament Saturday at Solomon.
