Wanted: Butler County wants our trash

Staff writer

Butler County Landfill wants Marion County’s trash.

A letter was received by county transfer station manager Rollin Schmidt and Marion County Commission regarding the solicitation.

The commission and Schmidt discussed their options at Monday’s commission meeting.

Schmidt said the Butler County landfill sent letters to neighboring counties with the hope of contracting more solid waste. Commissioner Randy Dallke instructed county clerk Carol Maggard to send a letter to the landfill manager and let him know the county is interested.

Schmidt reminded the commission that if the county wants to end the contract with Hamm Quarry, owner of Rolling Meadows Landfill by Topeka, a decision will have to be made before the end of September and the landfill company notified. Otherwise, the county will have to fulfill its contract for another year.

A household hazardous waste collection site will re-open at Hillsboro.

Hillsboro City Administrator Larry Paine told the commission that First Mennonite Church members are willing to coordinate the scheduling of volunteers for the HHW recycling center which will allow the center to re-open.

Schmidt had to close the center because there were no volunteers there to monitor the contributions.
