Warriors start season with win

Sports writer

PBHS Warrior basketball grabbed a big victory Friday at home in the first game of the season, defeating the Chase County Bulldogs, 53-24.

The next test will be the Marion Classic Tournament with a game against Oxford on Tuesday.

PBHS came out swarming on defense and running on offense. The first quarter pace slowed however, with a lot of whistles. When PBHS got on the board three minutes into the contest, it was with four free throws, two from Storm Pickens and two from Aaron Topham.

Jacob Simmonds added four points in the period and Topham had one more free throw. PBHS defense held Chase County to six and the Warriors led, 11-6, at the end of the first quarter.

PBHS offense caught fire in the second, led by Martin Hofkamp with six points. Simmonds added five and Brian O’Neal, Topham, and Pickens each contributed a basket. The Bulldogs were held to five and the PBHS lead at the half, 28-11.

Once again, the Warriors had a good offensive quarter and scored 14 in the third. O’Neal put in six with Topham adding four. Isaac Burnett and Simmonds each added two. Chase County only managed to tally five and the Warrior lead was 42-16.

Warrior offense had 11 points in the final period of the contest and the Bulldogs scored eight.

O’Neal led the quarter with four and Simmonds, Hofkamp, and Matt Hiebert each added two points. Topham had a free throw.

The performance led to PBHS taking the victory in the season opener.

Simmonds led the PBHS offense with 13 points. O’Neal had 12 and Hofkamp and Topham each had 10. Pickens had four and Hiebert and Burnett each had two points.

Simmonds had nine rebounds and Hofkamp had six.
