Webers advance to state tennis tournament

For the second consecutive year, Hillsboro High School girls tennis is sending a doubles team to the state tournament.

Sisters Courtney and Allison Weber placed third in the Wichita Independent regional Friday to secure a spot at state, a year after Becky Faber and Emma Heyen went to state.

The Webers began the tournament with consecutive shutouts against Douglass and Trinity Catholic of Hutchinson, 6-0 and 6-0 in both matches.

In the semifinals, they lost to Jillian Poynter and Cara Anderson of Wichita Independent, 6-2 and 6-3.

Because the top six teams advance to state, the Webers had already secured a trip to state before their third-place game against Rachel Mercer and Stacy Sones of Conway Springs. The Trojans won the match in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, and 6-3.

The 3-2-1A state tennis tournament will be Friday and Saturday at Dodge City High School, 2201 Ross Blvd., Dodge City.

Hillsboro’s other doubles team, Peyton Loewen and Erin Winter, lost in the first round against no. 1 seeded Abby Koester and Chelsea Ebenkamp of Conway Springs, 6-0 and 6-0.

In the singles bracket, Katie Claassen lost in the first round against Lyons, 6-1 and 6-2. Claire Heyen lost to no. 1 seeded Colleen Zirkle of Wichita Independent, 6-0 and 6-0.

As a team the Trojans placed fourth out of 10 schools in the region. It was the final tournament of the year, excluding state.
