Contributing writer

The Goessel boys’ basketball regular season ended Feb. 25 with at loss at Berean. Goessel actually led at the end of one quarter 9-8, but the Warriors turned up the defense and scored 26 points in the second period to take a 34-17 lead at halftime.

The Berean lead increased even more and by the end of the third period, the home team had built a 53-23 lead. With the 30-point lead, a running clock began for the whole fourth period and the coaches emptied the benches. The score of the final game of the regular season for Goessel was a 61-31 loss.

Ben Wiens, who has been averaging 14 points per game this season, led the Bluebirds in scoring with 10 points. Although Goessel out-rebounded the Warriors, the Bluebirds were no match for the 61 percent shooting from the field for Berean.

Zach Showalter scored five points, Brian Hiebert and Lawton Makovec each scored four points. Josh Schmidt, Kellen Froese, Connor Davis, and Reece Hiebert each scored two points.

Goessel ended the regular season with a 7-12 record and are seeded third at the Hartford substate tournament. The boys will play Flinthills High School on Thursday and the winners will advance to play on Saturday.
