Wild week leaves Warriors unscathed

High-scoring contests, a triple-overtime match, and Marion continuing as the county’s sole unbeaten team highlighted the week for varsity football.

Marion

Marion beat Remington, 36-13, on the road Friday night.

Quarterback Jack Lanning opened scoring with an 18-yard touchdown pass followed by a 66-yard touchdown run by Trevor Schafers.

Lanning would do a 42-yard touchdown run of his own.

A faulty snap by Remington allowed the Warriors’ defense to recover a fumble, and Schafers scored again on a 25-yard run.

Lanning would see the end zone one more time on a five-yard run.

Marion (4-0) will be back home Friday night for a second time this season, playing its homecoming game against Belle Plaine (1-3).

Peabody-Burns

The Warriors won their homecoming game 76-58 Friday in a back-and-forth scoring battle with Pawnee Heights.

Peabody-Burns quarterback Aiden Hurst finished the game with 13 completed passes in 23 attempts for a total of 345 passing yards, including four touchdowns and two interceptions.

Freshman Jameson Miles led the team with 204 receiving yards for three touchdowns.

Junior Cade Gossen kept it tight on defense with seven solo tackles and nine tackles altogether.

Sophomore Joesuf Aydelott was able to get to the quarterback for 1 1/2 sacks.

Peabody-Burns (2-2) will hit the road this Friday to play Southern Coffey County (2-2).

Goessel

The Bluebirds were hoping for their first win of the season at home against Herington.

Both teams turned the ball over on downs before Goessel put together a drive that resulted in Jake Flaming taking the ball five yards around right end for a 6-0 lead.

However, it took Herington only nine seconds to take the ensuing kickoff 60 yards and score a two-point conversion for an 8-6 lead.

Turnabout was fair play. After the Railers scored on a five-yard run, Flaming sprinted down the left sideline 65 yards for a touchdown, and Noah Schrag ran in the conversion to tie the game 14-14.

Other would-be Railer scoring drives in the first half were eradicated by penalty and stopped by Goessel on the nine-yard line.

Goessel took the lead after Flaming weaved his way 40 yards for another score and was on the receiving end of extra points.

After defensive stalemate and a drive that stalled at the 11 yard line, Herington tied the game with 2:04 to play.

Both teams scored but failed to convert in the first two overtimes. The Railers held the Bluebirds scoreless in the third but scored on their own possesion to win the district battle, 40-34.

The Bluebirds (0-4) will play at Solomon (1-3) on Friday.

Hillsboro

The Trojans were unable to contain Ellsworth, losing 45-15 Friday night at home.

The Trojans opened the game with a 45-yard touchdown pass to Wyatt Plenert in the first quarter but wouldn’t score again until late in the fourth.

Seth Driggers was the other Trojan to reach the end zone. Both receiving touchdowns were thrown by Dawson Boldt.

“Ball control and communication on the field,” coach Demetrius Cox cited as areas the team could improve on. “This week in practice, we’ll be focusing on tightening up our defense and working on our offensive strategies to be more precise in our execution.”

Jesiah Gooch and Anders Weisbeck lead the defense with 15 tackles between the two.

“We’ll also emphasize the importance of staying positive and maintaining a strong team spirit as we prepare for the upcoming challenge,” Cox said.

Hillsboro (2-2) will be on the road this Friday at Halstead (2-2).

Centre

Centre Cougars was blanked Thursday by Waverly, losing 45-0.

“We are still trying to get healthy,” coach Kelly Steiner said. “Injuries have forced us to move people around to new positions and have greatly affected what we can do. The kids are working hard to learn and improve every day.”

Centre (2-2) will have a bye this week .
