Winter returns with a bite
Governor says county is in state of disaster emergency
The wind blew so hard at times Monday night and Tuesday, it was difficult to tell if it was snowing or if the wind was just blowing it around.
Single digit temperatures and winds topping 40 mph, sent wind chills as low as 15 to 20 degrees below zero.
Gov. Sam Brownback named 53 counties, including Marion County, in a State of Disaster Emergency Declaration, effective 6 a.m. Tuesday. The declaration will allow the county to use state resources and funds to expedite emergency assistance statewide.
The anticipated winter weather began Monday with sleet falling in the county. Numerous accidents that occurred in the county were vehicles sliding in ditches.
Snow began to fall Monday night, continuing Tuesday and a gale-force north wind made temperatures dangerously cold. Up to six inches of snow is anticipated when the snow clears out later this week. Temperatures also are predicted to be in the upper 30s and 40s by the weekend.
All schools in Marion County were closed Tuesday and all sporting events postponed or canceled.
Drifting snow and near white-out conditions were the main concerns for motorists Tuesday.
With frigid temperatures and moisture on power lines, officials were preparing emergency shelters.
In case of loss of power, residents may seek shelter at the following locations:
- Burns: community building, 301 N. Washington St.
- Florence: Carriage Manor, 124 E. 9th St.
- Goessel: City building community room, 101 S. Cedar St.
- Hillsboro: City building community room, 118 E. Grand Ave.; Scout House, Memorial Park.
- Marion: City building basement, 203 N. 3rd St.
- Peabody: Legacy Park, 407 N. Locust St.
