A Topeka woman who bonded out of jail April 9 was booked back in on new charges less than 50 minutes later.

Jasmine Marie Steele, 22, was first arrested about 11 p.m. April 8 for driving while suspended.

At her bond appearance the following morning, Steele told District Judge Michael Powers that she had needed to get medical attention for her young daughter. Steele bonded out about 10:30 a.m. Monday.

According to jail administrator Jim Philpott, Steele called her mother to come from Peabody to pick her up, and a confrontation between the two women began before they got out of the parking lot.

“She got totally out of control with the person who came and got her,” Philpott said.

Things calmed down between the two and they drove off, Philpott said.

A short time later, the mother summoned deputies to the tree-burning pit at the south edge of Marion. The pair had gotten into another confrontation and the mother pulled over the car and called for police.

When Deputy Derek Fetrow arrived, Steele became confrontational with him. Fetrow took her back to jail, where she was booked on suspicion of battery of a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct, and a misdemeanor charge of criminal damage to property.

The short time she was free before being booked back in was surprising, Philpott said.

“She set a new record,” he said.

The jail’s booking website listed the battery charge as “battery on a law enforcement officer; physical contact with judge on duty,” but Philpott said that was “a misgrab on the statute.” Steele did not have physical contact with Powers.
