Would-be shelter operator reined in

Staff writer

An attempt to find a foster placement for two dogs drew a rebuke from a state licensing agency Monday.

Victor Buckner, who is working to open a shelter called “Wags and Wiggles Furever,” posted a message seeking care for a friend’s two dachshunds.

It didn’t take long to get a call, followed up by an email, from an inspector with Kansas Department of Agriculture.

“I was just trying to help a friend who’s moving and wanted to know if I could find anybody who could take care of his two dachshunds,” Buckner said. “I got a call from KDA today saying I couldn’t do that until I got my license.”

The call asked if Buckner is already fostering dogs.

“I took the post down and said we can’t do that until we’re licensed,” he said.

“It has been brought to our attention, until we are licensed we cannot help with fostering or re-homing of any animals,” the post reads. “Sorry, however we can still take donations and we can still help with feeding, if you are still in need of dog food.”

Buckner said he will contact Heartstrings Animal Advocates in El Dorado until he has his license.

“I can’t provide fosters or re-home dogs right now,” Buckner said.
