Sara Hill, president of the Hillsboro Teachers Association, has been awarded the Walnut Valley UniServ "Rookie Leader" award. Hill has worked to build an open relationship with the board of education. At the same time, she has led the teachers association in the defense of teacher and association rights.

Chuck Abrahams was honored recently for being local postal volunteer of the year and was presented a certificate of recognition.

The Tabor College Student Activity Center will be renamed Campus Recreation Center, according to Jack Braun, vice president of student development.

Computers in the classrooms at USD 410 received a big push at the monthly board of education meeting as the board voted to obtain bids for the purchase of approximately 70 computers, printers, software and some furniture. The proposal is estimated to cost the district $162,000.

The purposes of the annual Hillsboro Folk Festival, planned for May 23, are two-fold according to Adobe House museum director David Wiebe. The event is important to educate people about the area's history and as a fund raiser for the Hillsboro Historical Society.

Shoppers in Kansas will pay a little more sales tax June 1, following the passage of the statewide school finance plan last week. The current state sales tax will go from 4.25 cents to 4.90. The new sales tax locally will rise to 6.40.
