Marshall Wayne Hoffner was the 1994 New Year's baby born at Salem Hospital Jan. 14. He is the son of Michael and Ginger Hoffner of Durham.

Gov. Joan Finney has announced the appointment of Peggy Goertzen to the Kansas State Historical Records Advisory Board.

James Meier, a 6th grade student at Hillsboro Middle School, won the school-level competition of the National Geography Bee.

The Hillsboro girls slipped out a victory against Sedgwick Friday, 38-35. Taryn Ratzlaff led the team with nine points.

The Hillsboro boys pounded Lyons 80-53 in the opening round of the Adolph Rupp Invitational Tournament at Halstead. The boys are seeded fourth in the tournament and will face Cheney in the next round.

The state unemployment rate fell to its lowest level so far this year, according to the Kansas Employment Report. Marion County recorded a 2.8 percent unemployment rate with 176 of the 6,282 civilian labor force being unemployed.

Hillsboro is in the process of funding two water projects, one which the city has received a state grant for a part of the job and another which the city will fund.

Administrators and faculty of USD 410 are working with architects to come up with a finalized plan for a tentative new middle school building to be located where the current building now stands.
