Only principal Patrick Call at Hillsboro Elementary School was pleased with the turnout at recent parent/teacher conferences. Call reported more than 90 percent of the parents attended appointments to discuss students' progress with their teachers. Both middle school principal Evan Yoder and high school principal Glen Suppes reported lower turnouts and hopes to increase attendance for next year's conferences.

Karl and Velma Funk of Hillsboro will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary with an open house at Trinity Mennonite Church. Karl Funk and Velma Krehbiel were married Nov. 17, 1954, at Bethany Mennonite Church, Kingman.

The Community Thanksgiving Celebration will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 20 in Hillsboro High School gym. The public is invited to attend for a time of singing, giving thanks, and a testimony shared by Don Frenzen, a teacher at Hillsboro High School.

Hillsboro City Council members and USD #410 school superintendent Gordon Mohn discussed an apparent misunderstanding regarding the closing of a portion of Grand Street during the new middle school building construction. In essence, school officials felt they had the authorization form the city and city personnel maintained they assumed only half of Grand would be closed. The council voted to allow a one-half block of Grand from Jefferson to the alley to remain closed through May 1995.

Hillsboro's city superintendent Brent Boring said Hillsboro's water is safe to drink and the slight odor and discoloration is normal for this time of year. The water at Marion Reservoir "turned over" a few weeks ago causing the silt at the bottom to mix in the water.
