Members of the Hillsboro High School FFA Chapter held their annual Parent-Member-Employer Banquet and Awards Program on May 11 at the high school commons. Nearly 250 people attended. Dr. Robert Brown, former USD 410 superintendent, was awarded the chapter's honorary degree.
Winners in the Hillsboro Public Library's short story writing contest were Matt Willems, 3rd-5th; Alisa Jost, 1st-2nd; Aaron Lautt, 6th-8th; and Lynn Jost, adult.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest P. Suderman will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with an open house on May 30 at Parkside Homes Fellowship Hall in Hillsboro. They were married May 31, 1933, at Brudertal Mennonite Church.
After learning of how the Hillsboro Public Airport asphalt runway is crumbling, hazardous chemicals are in storage at the airport and refueling of fuel and chemicals is being done of the runway, the Hillsboro City Council decided to put an immediate stop to the situation. The council hurriedly passed an ordinance prohibiting the commercial use of the city airport for the handling or use of any pesticides, herbicides or hazardous chemicals.
The downtown district of Hillsboro will soon receive sewer line upgrades, thanks to a $383,000 low-cost loan program through the state.
As of Monday afternoon, Marion Reservoir was 6 1/2 feet above its normal pool level. Two gates were opened over the weekend to decrease the water level in the reservoir which is estimated to be at around 80 percent of capacity. Picnic areas of Cottonwood Point have been rendered useless because of continued heavy rainfall.
