Rezoning for a six-acre tract of land on the west edge of Hillsboro was put on hold last Thursday at the Marion County Planning commission meeting. The area of land, owned by West Winds Limited, is not within the city limits of Hillsboro. If approved, the housing development would "back into houses" within the city and west of Trinity Mennonite Church, explained county planning administrator Herb Bartel.
Emergency personnel from throughout Marion County participated in the simulation of a cold water near-drowning at Marion Reservoir Saturday, Feb. 25. Conceived and planned by Corps of Engineers Park Ranger Terry Holt, Marion County Emergency Medical Services Director JoAnn Knak, and Marion County Sheriff Ed Davies, the purpose of the exercise was to practice and critique response to a cold water emergency.
Karen Nikkel, rural Lehigh, has had an original poem published in "Dark Side of The Moon," a treasury of today's poetry compiled by The National Library of Poetry. The poem is titled "The Master" and the main subject is "The Master's Sacrifice."
The 1995 Leadership Marion County Class kicked off Feb. 7 with a trip to Topeka to visit with state legislators and other elected officials. The members are: Pat Ash, Reuben Feuerborn, Peggy Jay, Tom Kaufman, Coleen Koop, Carol Maggard, Stuart Meador, Brad Putter, Susan Robson, Todd Vogt, Sharon Williams and Pam Meador.
Phyllis Nickel, Hillsboro, is a recipient of the athletic department's academic excellence award at Fort Hays State University. She was recognized Wednesday, Feb. 22, at a pre-game reception and half-time ceremony during the FHSU vs. University of Kearney-Nebraska basketball game.
