There weren't many dry eyes in the packed Marion County courtroom Friday morning when Judge Michael Powers presided over the sentencing of Donald Stangle Sr, the Newton optometrist convicted of involuntary manslaughter and driving under the influence. The traffic accident caused the death of Hillsboro resident Kaye Bartel last summer and injured several others. The complicated sentence, begins with a 16-month prison term.
Recently the State Office of the Kansas FFA announced the top 25 South Central Kansas District FFA Proficiency Award Winners for the 1994-95 school year. Three of those winners are students of Hillsboro High School. They include Kyle Adams, Todd Becker and Ryan Peters.
Hillsboro High School agriculture students recently captured top honors at the South Central Kansas District Entomology Contest held at Buhler. Besides winning the top "A" team competition, the local youth also won the top three "B" team competitions and nine of the "top-10-individual" positions.
The HHS boys hope to hoop it up big in Hutchinson. The Trojan boys claimed the championship at the sub-state tourney held last week in Hillsboro, defeating Lyons, Hesston and Sterling for a spot in the 3A State Basketball Tournament in Hutchinson. The team goes into the tournament with an 18-5 overall record.
The Lady Trojans clinched the championship at the sub-state basketball tournament in Hillsboro last week with easy wins over Herington, Lyons and Southeast of Saline. The girls finished their regular season with a 21-2 overall record and will enter the 3A State Basketball Tournament this week.
