At the city council meeting, the council considered a merger between the Hillsboro Public Library and the Hillsboro High School and Middle School library. The idea of merging public and school libraries isn't so bad, according to two library officials, one from Kensington High School and the other from St. John, who have nothing but good things to say about the idea. Whether to merge or not rests with the Hillsboro Public Library board.

John H. Suderman, Salem Home, was the honored guest at a birthday dinner celebrating his 90th birthday on July 26 in the Salem Home family room. Suderman spent all of his life farming five miles south and 1/2 mile east of Hillsboro. Hosting the dinner was his oldest daughter, Betty, and husband Calvin Friesen of Wichita.

It was clear that a new superintendent was at the helm during Monday night's school board meeting. The board approved a 1,086 school calendar as opposed to the usual 181 day option.

Dale Franz of Hillsboro had a hole-in-one recently at the Highlands Golf Club in Hutchinson. Franz used a nine-iron on the 130-yard par three 16th hoe. It was witnessed by Scott Brady of Hillsboro and John Settle of Larned.

The USD #410 board of education approved the addition of a one-half time custodial position since the media center has added 8,500 square feet of space to the grounds and a library aide for four hours each school day so that the Wiebe Media Center may be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each school day.
