Ray and Grace Brandt will celebrate 40 years of marriage on Sunday, Sept. 6, with an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Tabor Mennonite Church in rural Newton. They were married Sept. 2, 1952, at the First Mennonite Church in Hillsboro. Hosting the celebration are the couple's children: Julie Hendricks, Mike and Deb Brandt, all of Hillsboro; and Laurie and Joe Luken of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Descendants of Jacob J. and Maria Schale Penner met for a family reunion on Aug. 23 at the Iron Kettle Restaurant in Hillsboro. Harry and Helen Hanneman organized and hosted the gathering.
Mark and Patty Seibel are visiting in the U.S. from their home in the Dominican Republic where he is employed by the U.S. Foreign Services as a consul. He is the son of Robert and Betty Seibel of Hillsboro, and she is the daughter of Franklin and Elanor Goertzen of rural Newton.
The 10-year-old Hillsboro baseball team was named Cottonwood Valley League Champions. Team members are Zachary Unruh, Scott Brubacher, Nathan Fish, Tyson Ratzlaff, Grant Wiens, C.J. Thiessen, Mike Baltzer, Scott Isaac, Scott Winter, C.J. Hill, Andy Anderson, Kane Adams, Jamey Luna, Jesse Hamm, Dallas Bartel, and Jared Hefley.
Karl Herold of Wichita has been appointed Hillsboro's new interim postmaster. He replaces current interim postmaster Sharon Smith who recently opted for early retirement. Herold formerly worked in the training section of the Wichita area post office and will be assigned to Hillsboro for an unspecified length of time.
