A 90-cent across-the-board increase in refuse rates was approved during a special Hillsboro City Council meeting Saturday. The rate increase will affect both residential and commercial trash customers.
The Hillsboro High School debate team of Gene Hiebert and Jeremy Clark took second place in a win-loss record at the Mid-Kansas League debate tournament novice division in Remington Dec. 5. Hiebert and Clark took first place in speaker points and Hiebert took first place in individual speaker points.
The Hillsboro Middle School eighth grade girls' basketball team defeated Florence 36-12 Dec. 3. Ruthie Harder led the team with 18 points and seven steals. Riann Hill scored seven points and pulled down six rebounds.
After an impressive 102-71 win over Bethany last Wednesday, the Tabor College men's basketball team fell 86-55 Saturday night at home to Ottawa. Chris Strathman led the Jays in both games, 22 points and 18 points respectively.
An estimated 30 to 40 Hillsboro Elementary School students have been diagnosed with strep throat, and many more students at the high school and middle school level have also been affected.
Facility considerations will be on the agenda of the USD #410 Board of Education meeting Dec. 14. Board members will discuss the Americans with Disabilities Act report presented by architect John Prigmore at the last meeting. The report revealed problems with the district's facilities regarding the new legislation. The board will discuss building remodeling and updating and consider the needs of each facility.
