At their Aug. 1 meeting, the Hillsboro City Council laid the groundwork for some ordinance revisions, lowering the curfew for 15-year-olds and younger to 10 p.m. Officer Dan Harper reported to the council that increasing activities of juveniles out at one, two, and even three o'clock in the morning were resulting and were correlative with an increase in more serious crimes. Currently 21 crimes are under investigation, including rapes, sodomy, indecent liberties, theft, vandalism, and aggravated burglary. Most of these crimes involved local teens as well as juveniles from surrounding towns.

Brent Barkman was appointed by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman to serve on the National Honey Board. Barkman was seated as a board member at the National Honey Board's annual meeting held June 23 in Colorado Springs. Barkman will serve a three-year term representing honey handlers on the 13-member board.

The 65th Annual Marion County Fair was another great success, offering a carnival filled with exciting rides, food and games that left a feeling of satisfaction, a parade complete with bands, floats, clowns, and square dancers, and a rodeo with all the hoopla of bull riding, barrel racing and calf scrambling. But, of course, the big event of the week was the demolition derby with its engine-roaring, hard-hitting, mud-slinging action. This year's winner of the derby was Dean Suderman.
