Representatives from Flint Hills RC&D and the Marion County Conservation District met with Marion County Commissioners to ask approval for a dry hydrant to be installed at Marion County Lake. A dry hydrant would give area fire departments a greater capacity to draw water out of the lake. The hydrant would be positioned under the freeze line and above the bottom, with a filter on the end of the line which would draw cleaner water into the line. Cost to the county would be minimal — just the use of the back hoe and operator. Other expenses would be covered by Flint Hills RC&D and MCCD. The proposed site for the dry hydrant is near the heated dock. The Marion County Commissioners agreed to furnish their part of the project.
There seems to be a resurgence of life on Hillsboro's Main Street. New businesses are coming in, and other businesses are giving their storefronts a coat of paint or a touch of repair. Remodeling can be contagious. In every case, it's a welcome sight. Owners caring about how their property looks is a good sign for Hillsboro economy. Perhaps this effort of "sprucing up" should be considered by some of the rental property owners in town. Improving rental properties in town could cut down on crime and abuse in the community. According to police, those types of areas are "hotbeds for activity."
Kansas State University alumni and friends from Marion County contributed $10,673 during the last fiscal year, as gifts to the Kansas State University Foundation topped $20.4 million.
