Approximately 240 participants walked, ran, or biked Sunday to raise funds for needy persons in underdeveloped nations through CROP.

The lights went out in the auditorium, but people attending the Salem-Parkside Gift Day Sunday night in Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church had no trouble finding their pocketbooks. The event took in $9,920.59 with almost another $1,000 in pledges.

Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce delivered 15 welcome baskets in September. Baskets were delivered to Jean Armburst, James Williams, David Schmidt, Paul Hein, John Darting, Doug Johnson, Sam Sneed, Eugene Nagle, Dennis Cain, Anna Morris, Ken Meisinger, Bruce Siebert, Darlene Graves, Sandra Willems, and Jeff Schmidt.

Mary Patry celebrated her 91st birthday Sunday afternoon at Salem Home.

Sharon Kay Schauf, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Schauf, Hoisington, and Glen Prieb, son of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Prieb, Lehigh, were united in a double-ring ceremony Sept. 15 at St. Catherine's Church, Dubuque.

Homecoming queen candidates for Hillsboro High School are Debbie Dalke, Beth Hiebert, Diedre Reusser, Malvina Schmidt, and Denise Funk.

James Clark, principal of Hillsboro High School, announced today that Glenn Guhr, senior, has been named a commended student in the 25th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Captains of the Trojan football team are Sheldon Klassen, Jerold Heide, and Kirk Thurston. The Trojans are coached by Don Penner, Jerry Jones, and Art Balzer. The team manager is Doug Penner.

The Star-Journal is inviting the public to view newspaper production in operation Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 9 and 10 from 1 to 4 p.m. both days. The tour will show the computerized typesetting process and the page makeup process as well as other aspects of the business.
