In an apparent compromise move, the USD 410 Board of Education Monday night voted to close the Durham attendance center after the 1979-80 school term. The 5-2 majority vote came after an hour of executive session.

Mr. and Mrs. William Nickel of Hillsboro announce the arrival of their second daughter, Carlene Kay, born April 5, 1979, at Bethel Deaconess Hospital in Newton.

Christine Rooker and Mitchlyn Rahe, both students at Hillsboro High School, will attend Girls' State in June at the University of Kansas.

The Sundries at 106 N. Main will officially change owners at a grand opening celebration Saturday, April 14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Vic and Dot Herbel, owners for the past 30 years, will turn the business over to Susan Dalke and Bev Plenert.

Suzi Penner, bride-elect of Gerald Ollenburger, was feted with a linen shower Sunday afternoon at First Mennonite Church. Hostesses were Sharon and LaDonna Klein, Lillian and Denise Winter, Genny and Marci Abrahams and Sylvia Abrahams.

Louise Balzer, home economics instructor at USD 410 for more than 25 years, resigned her position at Monday night's meeting of the board of education.

The USD 410 Board of Education made a two-year proposal to the USD 410 Teacher's Association at their fourth negotiations session Tuesday night at the elementary school. Under the proposal, the base salary will be raised from $9,000 to $9,800 in the first year to $10,900 the following year. The present top salary is $15,750. It will be raised to $16,820 for next year and to $17,920 the following year. Fringe benefits packages would total $850 the first year and $900 the second year
