The first snow of the year fell on New Year's Day to help break almost two months of drought in this area as well as over the entire state. The official gauge at the post office reported 2 1/2 inches of snow.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Just announce the engagement of their daughter, Dorothy, to Warren Deckert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Algy Deckert, all of Hillsboro.

Mr. and Mrs. James Thiessen and daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Frantz and Martha Frantz returned Monday morning from Galesburg, Ill., where they visited with Dr. and Mrs. Allen Hiebert, Mark and Julie. They also visited with Mr. and Mrs. Ray Vogt, Ryan and Ricky in Normal, Ill.

Paul Jost, student at the Kansas University Medical School, spent the holidays with his family, Mrs. Orville Jost and Doozy.

Rev. Ed. Springer will assume the duties as pastor of the First Mennonite Church Feb. 1. Rev. Springer is currently living in Markham, Ill., a suburb of Chicago. He and his wife Esther have three children: Todd, 10, Melanie, 8, and Amy, 5.

Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Rempel returned Sunday from Greeley, Colo., where they spent the holidays with their children.

Jeff Kroeker, 8, was one of the winners in the Joy of Seeing contest sponsored by the Kansas Optometric Association. He is the on of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Kroeker.
