Early this spring rats had invaded the straw in the chicken barn of Mrs. Jacob Stenzel. In a few weeks, the rats had multiplied, and there were rats of all sizes all over the barn. Traps were set with little success, and some were shot with a rifle, but the problem continued, and the chickens were scared to go into the barn. Then someone suggested getting a carton of Coca-Cola and putting some in a pan in the feed bin. Sure enough, the next day, dead rats were found all over the barn and loft and had to be carried out by the buckets full. A simple remedy — but it works.
Friday night Grady Davis of the Southern Pacific Cotton Belt railroad in Kansas City among other individuals were on the scene to hose down the charred rubble where a fire destroyed a wooden bridge near Durham. All that was left was a dry creek bed and two thin, suspended rails where the bridge had stood. Durham Fire Chief Bruce Hein said it may cost up to $300,000 to replace the bridge.
Virginia Vanek shot a hole-in-one at the Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course Tuesday, July 8. Vanek scored the ace on the 154-yard ninth hole and sank the 4-iron shot as her sister, who was accompanying her on the outing, looked on.
