August is national sandwich month. Did you ever wonder how the sandwich got its name? Well, John Montague, the Earl of Sandwich, loved to gamble. He refused to lay down his cards long enough to eat, so his servant started serving him slices of meat between chunks of bread which he could eat at the gaming table. Soon his fellow players began ordering "the same as Sandwich." Thus, the sandwich was born. Sandwiches are consumed at the rate of 300 million per day. They are an economical way to serve low cost, yet nutritious meals.
Tabor College groundskeepers received some extra help last week, and it didn't cost the school one cent. The help came from the Mennonite Brethren Church of Fairview, Oklahoma. The church has a lot of attachments to Tabor through former graduates as well as current students. Therefore, they provided volunteer labor of the eighteen individuals who made the trip. While the men worked on tasks such as pouring sidewalk cement from the south parking lot to the football stadium, the women worked in the library. The project is an inspiration to Tabor who will be contacting other churches in the district to offer volunteer help in other Tabor projects.
