Arts and crafts, the main features of the fair, are only part of what will be offered from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 22 at the 11th annual Hillsboro Arts and Crafts Fair. New this year are demonstrations by artists and craftsmen, bake sales, a puppet show, quick food stands, Dutch food, and a Kaffee Haus.
Hillsboro High School girls' volleyball team opened its season Tuesday with a disappointing loss to Hesston. Hesston defeated the Trojans in two games, 15-6 and 15-1.
Hillsboro High School football captains are Sheldon Klassen, Jerold Heide, and Kirk Thurston.
Carol Wiebe, secretary to the city administrator of Hillsboro since early 1977, resigned at Tuesday night's session of the Hillsboro City Council.
Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Stum of Ness City announce the engagement of their daughter Serena Lee to Jerel Pankratz son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Pankratz. Miss Stum is a 1978 graduate of Colby Community College and is employed at the Ness County Veterinary Hospital. Her finance also is a 1978 graduate of Colby Community College and is the trainer for Char-Lee Quarter Horses at Newton. An Oct. 6 wedding is planned.
Approximately 500 delegates and guests will gather in Hillsboro Sept. 8 and 9 for the Tabor Reorganization Conference. Most of the Saturday sessions will be devoted to business involving the transfer of ownership of Tabor College to regional Mennonite Brethren churches.
The 1979 Kansas wheat crop was the best ever as Aug. 1 production was estimated to be 402.8 million bushel, according to the Kansas Crop and Livestock Reporting Service. A record yield of 38 bushels per acre is estimated, one bushel better than the previous high of 37 bushels per acre reached in 1973 and eight bushels above the 1978 crop average.
