4-H celebrates 100 years years ago

This year's Marion County Fair will feature some special classes in honor of the centennial celebration of 4-H. The Decorated Cake and Centennial Candle classes do require pre-entry by calling the county extension office at 620-382-2325 by August 5th. The other two categories (Clover Creativity and Alumni) only need to have entries dropped off at the main building to the fair grounds by noon on Wednesday, Aug. 10th.

Decorated Cake: Any 4-H member may enter this class by decorating a birthday cake either in the centennial theme or any way they want to decorate it. The cakes will be cut and served to the public during the fair on Wednesday, August 10th at 9:00 p.m.

Centennial Candle: Any 4-H member may enter this class by creating a faux candle out of PVC pipe. It must be 2" in diameter and 30 inches tall but can be decorated with a varied assortment of items such as paint, stickers, glitter, etc. The 4-H member with the winning candle will be able to participate in a centennial ceremony at the Kansas State Fair on September 9th. There, a huge suspended faux birthday cake will be adorned with the winning candle entries from all over Kansas.

Clover Creativity: This class highlights any handmade item featuring the 4-H clover. Special awards will be given to the top 3 entries.

Alumni: The Alumni category is open to anyone and will display any item made from skills learned in 4-H, whether those skills were learned 20 years ago or more recently. "I learned it in 4-H" is the theme and items must be non-livestock oriented. This class will only be presented this year unless people like it and want to continue the category in years to come according to Nancy Pihl of the Marion County Extension office.
