The 1953 edition of the annual Marion County Fair was officially opened Tuesday evening with perhaps the largest first night crowd in history. The fair is off to a fine start with an all-around bigger and better exhibit than we have had in several years.

New water rates are going into effect with the Oct. 1, 1953, billing. The minimum will be 2,000 gallons for $1.25 and from there on it takes an approximate 15 percent increase.

Mr. and Mrs. Ray Funk have chosen the name Rodney W. for their son who was born Sunday, Aug. 30, in Salem Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Weinbrenner of Reedley, Calif., are the maternal grandparents and Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Funk are the paternal grandparents.

The 93rd birthday of Mrs. Jacob Goertz was observed Sunday with a dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bruno Goertz. All of Mrs. Goertz's children were here for the occasion.

Mrs. Franklin Harms entertained a group of children at a party Tuesday morning in honor of their daughter Linda's third birthday. Miss Mary Knaak assisted Mrs. Harms in the games and serving refreshments of ice cream, cup cakes, Ritz crackers and Kool Aid to Barbara and Brenda Bonesteel, Dennis and Wanita Ediger, Connie and Cheryl Groening and Susan Hiebert.
