A celebration in honor of Mr. Cornelius J. Block's one hundredth birthday brought together several hundred people from far and wide last Sunday and a special message from Senator Andrew Schoeppel who regretted that he could not attend. Mr. Block, who spent most of his life in the Hillsboro community, appeared to be in good health for his exceptional age. For the past several years he has resided at the Bethesda Home for the Aged in Goessel.
For the second time in three weeks fire destroyed a hog barn at the Lowell Unruh home northeast of Hillsboro Tuesday morning. Paul Epp, a neighbor, noticed the fire and raced to the scene in his car. The barn was a total loss.
Mr. Wesley Loewen, owner of the Loewen Radio and Appliance Store in Hillsboro, has been spending his spare hours for the past three years bringing the fur industry to this town. Although chinchillas are being raised in this area, Mr. Loewen is the first to try the famous mink.
Ed Seibel, local auctioneer, has been appointed as assessor for the city of Hillsboro and received his papers the first of the week.
The entire community is invited to see the highly interesting film on polio Monday night at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The film shown through the courtesy of Mrs. Edna O'Conner, county health nurse, depicts the extensiveness and treatment of this crippling disease.
Wharton Hoch, editor of the Marion Record-Review, was elected president of the Kansas Press Association at its annual convention in Topeka last week. Mr. Hoch has served as vice president of the organization during the past year.
