John W. Suderman, 82, pioneer Hillsboro merchant, passed away Friday morning, Dec. 10, at Salem Hospital where he had been a patient since Nov. 22. He operated a general mercantile store in partnership with J. V. Harms, until 1929, when the establishment became Suderman and Schultz. In 1939, Suderman sold his interest to Henry Schultz and retired from active business management.
Shirley Suderman, 19, of Hillsboro was one of 12 Kansas 4-H Club members who were national winners in the 1954 4-H award programs at the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago.
Jake Klassen and his Hillsboro Grade basketball team started off the 1944-55 basketball season with two wins when they downed Herington in the opening game, and then defeated the Marion Grades Thursday evening at Marion, 32-28. For Hillsboro, it was Dale Reiswig scoring 15 points to lead scoring.
Members of the Live Wire H.D.U. and their children had their Christmas party Dec. 8 at the Wesley Loewen home. Mrs. Elmer Rempel, recreational leader, provided entertainment for the group. The refreshment committee: Mrs. Jake Jost, Mrs. Elmer Buhler and Mrs. Norman Abrahams, served a Christmas tree salad, holiday cookies, snowmen favors and coffee.
Master Ranney Lee Vogt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Curt Vogt, celebrated his fifth birthday on Friday, Dec. 10, by sharing his birthday cake and ice cream with the following guests: Morris and Harris Ewert, Kenny and Barbara Bernhardt, Mary and Randy Reiswig, Duane Haefke, and his sisters, Shirley and Naomi Ruth. Mrs. Earl Ewert and Mrs. Erna Haefke assisted Mrs. Vogt with the party.
