Quick thinking and fast action prevented what would have been tragedy when Mrs. Harvey Jantz pulled to a stop at the Rock Island railroad crossing on U.S.-50 N just outside McPherson, waiting for an oncoming train. As she stopped, her car was rear-ended, shoving her into the path of the train. With two blown-out tires, Mrs. Jantz quickly gunned her car on across the tracks, narrowly escaping the oncoming train with no injuries.
Mennonites in the Hillsboro community, along with the Brethren in Christ, sent a message of encouragement and assurance of prayerful support to President Eisenhower at Geneva. Cabled by the Mennonite Central Committee, the message read: "Your efforts to ease tensions and promote international peace and goodwill are deeply appreciated by the Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches. We are confident that our people will pray for you and the other national leaders as you pursue these objectives in your meeting at Geneva and afterward."
Citizens of the city of Durham went to the polls Saturday to cast their vote (80 to 18) in favor of black-top surfacing their streets.
A hearing for the budget of the city of Hillsboro will be in the city office building at 8:00 p.m. on August 2. The mill levy has been raised in the 1956 budget to 17.48. The current year's mill levy is 13.40. The budget for 1956 calls for $217, 502.79 which is less than the 1955's expenditures of $220, 517.36.
