The thrill of adventure — a river voyage on a raft — proved to be disappointing and rugged for K.U. medical student Herb Friesen and his four companions. Friesen is spending the summer as an aid at the Navajo Reservation hospital in Shiprock. The 30-mile trip down the San Juan River from Shiprock, New Mexico, to Four Corners, New Mexico, seemed ladened with disaster. Much of the river ended up non-navigable, and the travelers had to abandoned their raft and resume the trip on foot. Trudging over rugged terrain proved time-consuming, and darkness set in before the team could reach their destination, forcing them to build a fire and camp for the night. Car troubles further plagued the group, but they finally got back to Shiprock, tired and dejected.
