Army personnel were in Hillsboro this week setting up a meeting date for the purpose of establishing a Ground Observer Post in Hillsboro. The Ground Observer Corps work in cooperation with the Kansas State Civil Defense. The post will be set up for two purposes — aircraft warning and tornado warning. A minimum of 168 volunteers from the community will be needed in organizing the observer post.

A swimming party for friends was the medium by which Cheryl Goertz, 11-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norton Goertz, celebrated her birthday Tuesday afternoon. Guests present were Virgie Hiebert, Nanette Anderson, Twila Waring, Ann and Mary Janzen, Rosemary Pankratz, Judy and Pamela Rein, Nancy Cooper, Beth and Cheryl Goertz. Following the swimming party, Cheryl and her guests returned to the Goertz home for lunch and games.

A new three prong convenience outlet is now required for all electric power equipment subject to shock hazard. Beginning January 1956 all electric power tools, air conditioning units, and other portable 115-volt electrical appliances that normally should be grounded to prevent a shock hazard must be equipped with a three prong plug on the appliance cord.

Duane Hagstrand, new band and orchestra supervisor in Hillsboro schools will direct the Hillsboro City Band for the first time in public concert Friday night on the front lawn of the high school. The concert will include the following numbers: Fighting Irish — Griggs; It Is No Secret — Hamblen; Salute to Youth — Biglow; Shine on Harvest Moon — Norworth; Golden Bears March — Yoder; Tell Me Why — Gold; Vanguard of Victory — Darcy; and Star Spangled Banner.
