'No-call' list is no hassle
The state's attorney general's office has given the invitation, and Kansans have responded in full force.
As of last Monday, almost 200,000 Kansas residents had signed up for the No-Call list, which protects consumers from unwanted telemarketing calls.
We first found out about the list several months ago, but it wasn't until August that the possibility became reality.
If your name is on this list, then most telemarketers are forbidden to call you — something that should come as a relief to those who are tired of being interrupted during dinner, while relaxing, or any other time of the day.
It's even easier to get on the list now than it was two months ago.
You can call a toll-free number: 1-866-362-4160. But be forewarned: the line is often busy.
If you're hooked up to the Internet, visiting the No-Call Web site is by far your best bet. Go to http://www.ink.org/public/ksag, and follow the link to a registration form.
Filling out the form and hitting the "send" button took me less than 20 seconds. Definitely better than spending hours on hold on the telephone, in my opinion.
If you register your name and telephone number by Sept. 23, you'll be on the list that comes out Oct. 1. But you won't start to reap the benefits of no unwanted telemarketers until the first of November.
If you don't register by the 9/23 cutoff, you'll make the next list, which cuts off on Dec. 23. By the time that list is published, it won't take effect until February.
Translation? Act now. It's completely free, and you have nothing to lose.
You just might gain a little peace.
