A Great Promise

By ROY KELLER

God's Word contains many great promises for the Christian. There is the promise of salvation in John 3:16. We all know this one by hear. Then, there is the promise of God's provision found in Philippians 4:6-7. Next, we are also glad for the promise of victory over the world found in I John 4:4-5.

Another great promise is found in Rev. 21:7. This pertains to those that are overcomers. We could go on and on, couldn't we? But there is one special verse that I would like to zero in on today. It is Philippians 4:19. Listen: But my God shall supply all you needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Let's note some of the reasons why this promise is so great for the Christian.

First, it is very personal, "My God" — not just any god, or a god, or the god in whom you happen to believe, but "My God." Paul was not referring to the gods of the Greeks, Romans, Assyrians, Babylonians, or Egyptians. He was referring to Jehovah God. The one who revealed Himself personally down through the ages to men and is still doing so, Jesus came to reveal the Father.

Second, this is a great promise because it is so positive, "My God shall supply." The word "supply" literally means to "fill to the full." Spiritually speaking, this is God's affirmative, the everlasting, yes, whatever I need will be meant.

Annie Johnson Flint wrote: "He gives more grace when the burdens grow greater, He sends more strength when the labors increase. To added affliction He adds His mercy, To multiplied trials, His multiplied peace. His love has not limit, His grace has no measure, His power no boundary known to men; for out of His infinite riches in Jesus — He gives and gives and gives again."

Third, this promise is not only personal and positive, it is filled with plenty. Listen again, But my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Paul had a great fondness of the word "riches." In Romans, he speaks about "the riches of His goodness," and "the riches of His wisdom." To the Ephesians he wrote, about "the riches of His Grace" and "the riches of His glory."

It has been said, "riches in glory seem high above our reach," but then Paul added, "In Christ Jesus." Treasures are all brought down to us. We are in Him, we are beside this treasure. We only have to put out our hand and take the wealth that is lying here. All that we need is in Christ. He is adequate!

God gives us the power for the things to be done, and for the needs to be met. He gives us plenty.

The Christian is the richest person on earth!
