A homebuying solution
Everyone knows that owning your own home is the way to go. It's financially sound, makes you truly a part of the community — and it feels darn good to be able to do what you want with the place you live in.
You don't have to persuade most Americans that homeownership is smart.
But it's a tiny thing called the down payment that's the slight hangup. It can take years to save the thousands necessary to put a five percent down payment toward a house.
If that's the situation you find yourself in, a new grant program may be your ticket to owning a home.
It's a program sponsored by Housing and Credit Counseling, a nonprofit agency supported by the state. And it gives $4,000 grants that qualifying buyers can use as a down payment.
Do the math, and you'll find that sum to be an adequate down payment for an $80,000 house.
To qualify, you must be a first-time homebuyer, hit a certain income requirement, and one member of your household must have a physical or developmental disability.
There are also a couple of other requirements, but you can find those on the Web site www.hcci-ks.org.
If you qualify for the program, look into it. Just imagine: getting free, no-strings-attached money to put toward a home.
