A wealth of wisdom
Some days I really like my job.
Does that surprise you — that this reporter has some tasks here at the paper that she likes better than others? It shouldn't. I'm a normal human being.
I get confused when I'm wading through endless budget numbers, hearing strange words like "levy," "ad valorem," "capital outlay."
If your goal is to be a "lifetime learner," skip the graduate school — just become a journalist.
But when I really enjoy my job is when I get to sit down, with a person or people, and just talk to them. Just get to know them.
So that's why I really enjoyed my time Tuesday morning talking to Milford and Kathryn Blair.
This Hillsboro couple has been married 65 years.
That's a long time — longer than some people live.
What's their secret? How did they get along all those years? What kinds of changes have they seen in their lifetimes, going from the early 1900s to the age of the Internet?
I wanted to find out. So I spent an hour with them Tuesday morning — which definitely wasn't long enough.
There's so much wisdom in this community. You find it at the Senior Center at lunchtime, and in the activity room and chapel at Parkside and Salem Homes.
The older folks who live around us have much to share. Let's make sure we take time to listen.
